Douglas Murray divided opinion during his recent debate with comedian and member of the Mises Caucus of the Libertarian Party, Dave Smith, on the Joe Rogan Experience.
The ensuing debate on X concerned Douglas insisting that “more experts” should be consulted on issues like revising the events of the Second World War, and ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
The most extraordinary exchange of the podcast was when Douglas asked Dave the last time he had visited Israel or Gaza, and Dave responding he had never been — then asking if he had to have visited Germany in the 1930s to discuss the evils of Nazism.
(It has since been mocked by Joe himself on an episode with comedian Tim Dillon.)
I posted this clip to X, and the comments were a revealing Rorschach test. Responses attributed both pro-Dave and pro-Douglas opinions to me, when the caption never offered one:
The most extraordinary exchange during Douglas Murray and Dave Smith's debate on Joe Rogan.
Dave says Israel's blockade is causing privation in Gaza.
Douglas asks Dave if he's ever visited Israel or Gaza.
Dave asks Douglas if he has to visit 1930s Germany to talk about Nazis.
So you can imagine my surprise when, the week after the episode released, Piers Morgan read out a tweet on his show that he attributed to me, that said: “Dave Smith is ignorant. Douglas Murray crushed him.”
No such tweet exists. I also posted this on X, saying a producer may have caused some confusion, but neither Piers nor a member of his team got in touch.
So, what do I think?
Dare I say it: Douglas Murray is right.
